From Dan Jackson:Matt Paulson and I are planning to join the WSO Lake Michigan field trip on Saturday, January 8, 2011. The event starts from the South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee at 8:00 and then heads north with stops at the Milwaukee River, North Point in Milwaukee, Doctors Park, Port Washington, Herrington Beach, 6 Mile Road, Kohler Andrae State Park, and North Point in Sheboygan.
This field trip is a great way to start a new birding year and often results in sightings of Lake Michigan specialties including Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, Harlequin Ducks, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Mute Swans, Snowy Owls, Snow Buntings, Lapland Longspurs, and as many as 7 species of gulls (including Thayer’s, Iceland, Glaucous, Great Black-back, Lesser Black-backed, as well as Herring and Ring-billed).
We will leave the La Crosse area at 4:00 am in order to get to Milwaukee before the event begins and we will leave Sheboygan for the trip home somewhere around 3:00 pm. We should get to La Crosse by 8:00 pm.
We will car pool to share expenses and the vehicle choice will depend on participation. Let me know if you are interested.
This trip will be a long and chilly day of birding. However, it is a trip that I really enjoy and it is a great way to start a new year off with a big day. Thanks, Dan
There will be a WMBD event at Myrick Park on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Events will include a bird walk at 6:30 AM, a family bird walk at 9:30, a bird presentation by River Valley Raptors at 10:30, and many other bird-related activities that make this a great family event.
The Myrick and Hixon Forest bird walks will be held on Tuesday (Myrick) and Thursday (Hixon) mornings from April 25 - May 11, 2023. The walks start at 6:30 AM and go until about 8:30. The Myrick walks will start from the base of the Rabbit trail near the Myrick Park Center and the Hixon walks start from the parking lot at the end of Milson Court. Due to severe flooding, it is likely that we will not be able to walk the marsh trails for the Myrick walks (at least for the first 2 weeks). We will adjust if needed by walking along the edge of the marsh and heading into the Oak Grove Cemetery (just west of Myrick Park). These walks are free and open to the public and will be led by Dan Jackson and Pat & Bobbie Wilson.
For our February Membership Meeting, Alan Stankevitz will give a presentation on Bird Photography. Alan is professional nature photographer from the Coulee Region. He will be sharing hints and tips on how to become a better photographer and will also share some of his outstanding photos. As always, this meeting will be free and open to the public.
